FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

From the Guilford Fire Department

Due to severe fire danger, all Guilford residents are hereby notified of an immediate ban on any outdoor burning, including the use of grills, firepits, campfires, and any other flame outdoors. This ban is issued in accordance with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s (DEEP) state-wide Burn Ban and Governor Ned Lamont’s state of emergency declaration across Connecticut, as we face extreme fire weather conditions.

As of today, October 26, 2024, the risk of wildfires is categorized as VERY HIGH to EXTREME, with no rainfall in the forecast. Our state is actively battling multiple fires, including the Hawthorne Fire, which has spread to over 100 acres in Berlin and Meriden, requiring significant resources and response support, including air operations.

Restrictions include:

- NO outdoor burning: This includes campfires, firepits, grills, and any use of flames outdoors.

- Avoid fire-prone activities: Please refrain from using power tools, dragging trailer chains, ATV/UTV activity without spark arresters, and any actions that could produce sparks or heat outdoors.

- Suspension of open burning permits: All permits statewide are currently suspended as a precaution under Connecticut General Statutes 23-49a.

Additional precautions for public safety:

- No-fly zone and restricted access: A no-fly zone is in effect over Lamentation Mountain. Lamentation Mountain State Park and Silver Lake Boat Launch are closed. Recreational drones, unauthorized hiking, and ATV activity are strictly prohibited near any active fire zones as they delay and endanger firefighting efforts.

The Connecticut DEEP has identified that most of the state’s wildfires are caused by human activities. In these conditions, even a small spark can ignite a wildfire, potentially endangering lives, properties, and vital resources. Each resident has a critical role in preventing further outbreaks and supporting our firefighters as they work to control the spread of existing fires.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Violation of this ban will result in a citation and fine. We urge everyone to take this situation seriously and to follow these guidelines to protect our community and emergency responders.

By adhering to this ban and exercising caution, we can collectively prevent new fires and ensure the safety of our neighbors and first responders. We thank you for your cooperation and support during this state of emergency.
